Abstract
This study is motivated by the importance of enhancing employee performance in metal manufacturing companies amidst increasingly competitive industry conditions. Developing employee performance is a crucial aspect for metal manufacturing firms like PT Sebastian Jaya Metal to maintain competitiveness in a tight industrial landscape. Employee performance issues at the company are suspected to be linked to work discipline often characterized by tardiness, unexcused absences, and violations of personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols. Furthermore, a suboptimal physical work environment including issues regarding noise, room temperature, layout, and supporting facilities contributes to this situation. This study aims to analyze the impact of work discipline and the physical work environment on employee performance, both individually and simultaneously, at PT Sebastian Jaya Metal. A quantitative approach was employed, involving a population of 250 employees. Sampling was conducted using the simple random sampling technique and Slovin's formula with a 5% margin of error, resulting in a sample of 154 respondents. Data were collected via questionnaires and subsequently analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, multiple linear regression analysis, t-tests (partial), F-tests (simultaneous), and the coefficient of determination (R²) using SPSS software (version 32). The results indicate that work discipline has a positive and significant effect on employee performance, evidenced by a calculated t-value of 5.969 and a significance level of 0.001 (< 0.05). The physical work environment also exerts a positive and significant influence on employee performance, with a calculated t-value of 6.406 and a significance level of 0.001 (< 0.05). Simultaneously, work discipline and the physical work environment significantly affect employee performance, as indicated by a calculated F-value of 80.868 and a significance level of 0.001 (< 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.517 indicates that 51.7% of the variation in employee performance can be explained by work discipline and the physical work environment, while the remaining 48.3% is influenced by factors outside this research model. It is concluded that work discipline and the physical work environment are important factors that significantly influence employee performance both partially and simultaneously at PT Sebastian Jaya Metal.
